Sherwood’s Classic Eats opens in Barnhart
The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, dinner...and chimney cakes.

Tubular, sugar-coated European cakes might not be on local diners’ radar, but that’s exactly what they’ll find at a new St. Louis area burger joint.
Sherwood’s Classic Eats, which opened last month in Barnhart, Missouri, serves chimney cakes and an extensive menu with 1950s-style diner classics.
The restaurant makes its chimney cakes by wrapping dough around a spit, roasting it like a hot dog, and dusting the cakes in cinnamon and sugar.
Chimney cakes come in small and large sizes. Patrons can opt for a Sweet Original—with vanilla sugar on the outside and a choice of topping including sprinkles, cookie crumbs, or granola—or a Nutella and Topping, which consists of a chimney cake slathered in melted hazelnut chocolate and topped with sprinkles, granola, and chocolate chips.
Customers can also get chimney cake as a cone with ice cream inside and such toppings as sprinkles, nuts, and whipped cream.
Known as Kürtőskalács in Hungarian, chimney cakes hail from Eastern Europe. Similar in consistency to a churro or doughnut, the flaky dessert dates back to Medieval times. The first known recipe for the cakes was found in the cookbook of a countess from Transylvania.
In addition to chimney cakes, Sherwood’s offers a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu, including such diner classics as burgers, sandwiches, shakes, and fries.
Many of the menu items are named for old vehicles. The Studebaker is composed of two flour tortillas stuffed with hashbrowns, scrambled eggs, and sausage gravy, served with toast or a biscuit and a side of sausage, bacon, or ham. A lunch sandwich, the Rambler Hot Bacon Turkey, includes oven-roasted, hand-carved turkey breast with bacon honey mustard sauce, tomato, cheddar cheese, and applewood smoked bacon.
And don’t miss Sherwood’s made-to-order burgers, including the Woody’s Hot Rod & Blue, with a grilled bun, 6-ounce patty, blue cheese, bacon, and house hot sauce. Burgers come with a choice of side: classic crinkle cut fries, tater puffs, coleslaw, or potato salad. Or, for a couple more bucks, customers can opt for onion rings, soup, or chili.
