Pretzetera, a pretzel-themed bakery at 9971 Lin Ferry Drive in South County, launched last year in a space that previously housed Mama’s Pretzel wholesale pretzel bakery. The tagline: “A twisted tradition from Mama’s kitchen.”

The Menu

Best-selling items at Pretzetera (a portmanteau of pretzels and et cetera) include Pretzel Dogs and Nuggy Dogs (half a hot dog wrapped in a pretzel bun, like pigs in a blanket), which do well on party trays.

Everything is homemade, from the New York–style water bagels and chocolate chip cookies to the cheesecake (a pre-order item because the cooling process necessitates using the ovens only for the cakes).

Another popular item is the “Pretzelachee,” their spin on kolache: hamburger-sized stuffed pretzels available in savory (pepperoni pizza) and sweet (sweet cream) varieties, with seasonal options such as jalapeño cheddar and buffalo chicken.

There are also specialty-shaped pretzels: candy canes, dinosaurs, skeletons, wedding bells, a Harley Davidson, Dachshunds, as well as hearts, shamrocks, and Celtic knots for upcoming holiday gifts.

The soft-style pretzels are a bit sweeter than most and remain soft longer, making them ideal for freezing and as sandwich rolls.

The bakery is owned by couple Courtney LaChance-Denton and Dan Denton, as well as friend Jason Arnold. Courtney started a bakery out of the Dentons’ home in 2019, and it eventually grew into Pretzetera, where the co-owners took over the Mama's space and recipe last year.

Pretzetera has quickly become a hit with families, given the cheery space, the pretzel nuggies, and the restaurant’s proximity to a dance studio and Grandma’s Playroom. (The Dentons also have four kids themselves.) The bakery also has a nut-free designation.

Pretzetera pretzels are also served at a number of area restaurants, including Tucker’s Place, Wildwood Pub and Grill, The Local House, Bomber O’Brien’s, and the recently reopened Humphrey’s.

Already, Pretzetera has grown so popular that they are looking to add a second location, most likely in St. Charles or Bridgeton.
