The PSG calls 'em Summer Eggs Benedict. In our youth, we called 'em Eggs in a Nest.
Looking for a new place for breakfast out in the wilds of Wildwood? Parkside Grille. Late night dining? Parkside Grille.
Lunch? Dinner? A place to listen to some live music? Parkside Grille, Parkside Grille, Parkside Grille.
The latest occupant of the semicircular space at the corner of Strecker and Clayton Roads is an all-purpose social spot, and its almost-perpetual hours of opening include a remarkably diverse menu for a dining room that only accommodates about 50 people.
The menu comes from chef Jean Ann Mantia, formerly of Great Rivers Saloon (née Schoemehl’s South Side Grill) and elsewhere. Another co-owner is her former partner from Great Rivers, Bob Wilhite, and if you’re keeping a chart, the other co-owner is Dave Stolze, Wilhite’s partner in Sky Music Lounge in Ballwin.
No underlying theme is discernable, with offerings that range from fish tacos (right) to a short-rib cheesesteak sandwich to a meatball flatbread to the self-identified “signature” item, the P.S.G. Loaded Lobster Club (above).
Lobster rolls aren’t exactly locavorian to this area, but they sure seem to be showing up frequently. Parkside Grille distinguishes its version with peppered bacon, avocado and a flaky croissant-like bun; even with all these added ingredients, the unmistakable flavor and texture of lobster comes through nicely. Sweet potato waffles are among the more unusual breakfast items, while O’Fallon, Ferguson and Kirkwood Station are included in the draft choices of local craft beers. (You can also get, for example, a Shock Top if you happen to swing that way.)
Parkside Grille has been open since June, and with at least one member of the ownership team circulating almost constantly during service, it’s easy to tell that the staff is tightly focused on service to ensure that all who stumble upon them will want to come back. Speaking of stumbling upon them, the address is on Strecker, but the only visible signage when we visited was on Clayton Road, so keep your eyes peeled for that unique corner turret when trying to find the place.
