Oh, the intrigue...
The media was told only that “a prominent St. Louis sports figure” would unveil a namesake sports bar and grill at Lumiere Place Casino & Hotels on Friday, September 26 at 6:45 PM.
Who could it be?
Jim Edmonds had been rumored to be flirting with another restaurant; Waino’d be a possibility; Sam Bradford has some time on his hands. After the Olympics, shootout master TJ Oshie certainly earned the rank of prominent. "Al Hrabosky’s Place" could feature "Mad Hungarian Goulash..."
But when one of our town's most famous and most likeable sports legends appeared in front of black-draped signage for the great reveal, the crowed smiled, even before Ozzie Smith opened the ceremony with, “I’m baaaaack...”
And so, just in time for another round of post-season baseball, Ozzie’s Sports Bar & Grill takes over for Stadium Sports Bar & Grill. During the brief presentation just outside the entrance, employees inside switched from their prior uniforms into red Ozzie’s shirts.
Jeff Babinsky, Vice President and General Manager of Lumiere Place, said that a name change was in order for the restaurant. Since Pinnacle Entertainment installed Stadium Sports Bar & Grills at several of its properties, when Pinnacle sold Lumiere to Tropicana Entertainment last year the restaurant needed to be renamed.
But as long as it remained a sports bar, the space really didn’t need to be refurbished: the mid-2011 conversion from SLeek steakhouse to Stadium Sports Bar & Grill still looks fresh, modern and uncluttered (despite its 55+ TV’s). Several oversized sepia photographs will be replaced with images more befitting The Wizard, otherwise the interior will remain largely the same.
Andreas Baecker will stay on as exec chef, overseeing a slightly revamped menu that includes a special “Smokehouse Corner” section. Double-glazed St. Louis ribs feature Baecker’s spice blend of smoked sea salt, chili powder, cumin, and garlic. Also from the recently purchased, self-basting, Southern Pride rotisserie smoker: a 24 oz. herb-rubbed pork steak, smoked bacon-wrapped chicken thighs, and a hickory-smoked half chicken. And, of course, the standards: a dry-rubbed brisket; and pulled pork, simmered in housemade bourbon BBQ sauce.
Ozzie’s Sports Bar & Grill has 32 beers on tap and 100 bottled brews.
Let the games begin.
