Bread: There are no bad options at Union Loafers, but the “light and mild white” is our choice for a sandwich. (In a pinch, the roasted pork–and–ham sandwich is one of the best in town.)
Mustard: Ryan Maher’s Wild Edibles mustard comes in three varieties—caramelized shallot, roasted garlic, and smoked ramp—and is available at Larder & Cupboard.
Produce: Stop by any farmers’ market for the freshest lettuce, tomatoes, and onions.
Meat: At Bolyard’s Meat & Provisions in Maplewood, go basic with roast beef, ham, or turkey. Or go nonconformist with sliced salami, mortadella, or braunschweiger.
Beverages & Accoutrements: Starr’s has picnic-friendly wines, beers, and sodas, plus an extensive cheese selection for your sandwich or for snacking.
Crackers & Spreads: Both the fig tapenade and mostarda (an Italian chutney) from Salume Beddu should be a staple at any picnic (and in any refrigerator). The same goes for the crispy croccantini.
