House of Wong in Clayton is on the move again.
In 2019, SLM reported that a developer had purchased a half-block parcel—the area formed by Maryland, Central, and Bemiston avenues and the mid-block alley between Central and Bemiston—and proposed a mixed-use project that would affect several Clayton restaurants.
The original deal fell through, but the tenants (who were all operating under month-to-month leases) knew it was likely a matter of time until another one emerged. John P. Field’s, Nami Ramen, Imo’s Pizza, and House of Wong eventually relocated within the neighborhood.
House of Wong recently moved into a smaller space a block away, at 19 N. Bemiston, which was still within the development parcel. Wishing to stay in Clayton, the owner then secured a space at 7515 Forsyth, which was previously home to such storied restaurants as The Leather Bottle and Fio’s La Fourchette, a spectacular restaurant owned by chef Fio Antognini and his wife, Lisa. (Fio died in a rock-climbing accident in Utah in 2018.)
The slightly below-grade space on Forsyth is twice the size as the previous location on Bemiston, which will allow for more inside dining, a bigger bar, and even more food options on the already extensive menu. Construction is underway for what is expected to be a 60-day buildout.
