When we heard that the bill of fare at the flagship location, near Vanderbilt University in Nashville, consisted of “a page of sliders and 100 canned beers,” we wrote off The Slider House as a nothing-special collegiate canteen. But like the eager freshman who signed up for a 18-hour load, boy, were we wrong (even managing partner Craig Ceranna admitted that “we gussied this one up a bit”). The second location is a well-orchestrated mix of incongruities, with industrial cage lights hanging from arcs of steel pipe above tabletops made of wood “straight out of the Mississippi.” And there are such signature details as double garage doors that roll up to showcase a beckoning patio with friendly benches, Adirondacks, and occasional live music. As to the main attraction, there are 20 sliders to choose from (including one with butter-poached lobster), a decision made harder by a host of salads, sides, boozy shakes, and 80 canned beers (the most in the metro area). The Slider House is a viable wide-net concept that appeals to children, teens, adults, and seniors. We understand that college kids like the place, too. 9528 Manchester, 314-942-6445, thesliderhouse.com.
