You can’t miss ’em: the three kings of Three Kings Pub, whimsically depicted on a weathered-wood wall at the new Des Peres location. We assumed they were Elvis Presley, King Kong, and King Louis IX, the city’s namesake—but alas, Henry VIII is among the big three. We are, however, confident about recommending any of the half-pound burgers, especially the fried egg– and bacon-topped Pogue Mahone. This is a pub where TVs do not overwhelm, so guests can ponder the subtle use of copper tones, the soft light cast by ring chandeliers, and the shelving sturdily held in place by black iron pipe. Medieval métayers would have appreciated Three Kings’ penchant for local produce, meat, and beer (with more than 30 varieties on tap). The menu includes hand-battered fish and award-winning chicken wings, along with the likes of zarzuela seafood stew and Moroccan pork shanks, appropriate fare for the culinary commoner or sophisticate. Our battle cry? Long live the kings!
