What could Jill Segal possibly do for an encore? First came Jilly’s Cupcake Bar & Café, followed by an appearance (and victory) on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars, then a line of house-made ice creams with cupcake add-ins, and now a retail store that churns them all together. Jilly’s Ice Cream Bar arose from Segal’s inner-child penchant for “skooshing” cake with ice cream, resulting in combinations like Space Monkey and revitalized classics like Browned Butter Pecan, with a vanilla salted-caramel ribbon. In the 60-seat private room—with frosted windows designed to keep it that way—the devil’s (food is) in the details: reclaimed wooden tables, some finished with swirls of pistachio green and strawberry pink; a wall of new ice-cream bowls and old scoops; even LED “sprinkles” on the ceiling. We’ve long complained that yogurt shops pop up like chain drugstores, but rarely do you see a house-made ice-cream shop, so we had to snicker when Jilly’s Ice Cream Bar opened steps away from a recently shuttered Walgreens.
