Clementine’s Creamery now open in Clayton
Tamara Keefe’s second brick and mortar store opens on Independence Day.
Does it get any sweeter (or more American) than indulging in a triple scoop ice cream cone on the Fourth of July?
Tamara Keefe doesn’t think so. And she worked half the night before readying her second Clementine’s Creamery so more of us could partake.
The mini-storefront at 730 DeMun opened at 11 a.m. this morning, but Keefe and her minions were still stocking the freezers at 2:30 last night: a dip cabinet with 24 flavors plus a stand-up freezer full of to-go pints. When asked by a certain scribe if she'd made a red, white, and blue ice cream for the occasion, the entrepreneur smiled, raised a weary eyebrow, and said “today we’re lucky to have ice cream at all.”
The state’s first microcreamery boasts eight “naughty” flavors (alcohol added) and 16 “nice” flavors (no alcohol), hence the formal name, Clementine’s Naughty and Nice Creamery.
The most popular summertime flavors, according to Keefe, are Blackberry Buttermilk (organic farmer’s market Missouri blackberries with scratch made buttermilk) and Peach Perfect (Eckert’s peaches with a swirl of homemade peach preserves and chunks of peach cake). The two flavors together, by the way, are phenomenal.
Clementine’s ice cream (two, three, or five flavors to the order) is offered in cups, sugar cones, cake cones, homemade waffle cones, as well as four flavored waffle cones (from Brooklyn's The Konery).
Tastes—from silver spoons, of course—are free.
Just before it was cleaned: the kids-handprint-smudged front door.
