It’s finally happening: Clementine’s is slated to open in Kirkwood on November 12.
When SLM announced this summer that The Custard Station in Kirkwood (140 W. Argonne) would become the sixth location of Tamara Keefe’s popular ice cream shops, Keefe was hoping for a relatively quick turnaround. Due to staffing issues (both in Kirkwood and for the manufacturing facility in North County), however, the opening date had more unexpected delays than the trains running adjacent to the property.
The diminuative new Clementine’s is literally an ice cream stand, markedly different than the other locations (in Lafayette Square, Clayton, Southhampton, Lake St. Louis, and the newest in Town & Country, all of which offer inside seating). In the past, the 208-square-foot building served as a taxi stand, a Texaco service station, and a flower shop for the Kirkwood’s Women’s Garden Club.
The smaller footprint means reducing the number of Clementine's hand-dipped flavors, though bowls, regular cones, and waffle cones will be available at the new location. The new store will focus on Clementine’s most popular flavors, such as Gooey Butter Cake, Salted Crack Caramel, Maple Bourbon, and Midnight Pleasures, and the vegan Coconut Chocolate Fudge.
The hours at the Kirkwood location will be 3–10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 3–11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
In addition, Keefe has released a limited-time seasonal flavor. Green-Eyed Monster, sour apple with Nerds flavor, will be sold in all five stores but only through the Halloween weekend. And look for the announcement of a special collaboration—the company’s biggest yet—to drop November 1.
In nearby Webster Groves, Beckie Jacobs of Serendipity is also planning for the holidays, offering bonbons in several different packages. A Hanukkah box set includes three coffee, three cinnamon, three vanilla, and three chocolate ice cream bonbons, all covered with sprinkles. Christmas bonbons include three peppermint, three cinnamon, three vanilla, and three chocolate ice cream bonbons covered in red, white, and green sparkles. Boxes are $20 each and available for pickup or delivery. (Hanukkah bonbons go on sale November 2; Christmas bonbons November 16.)
‘Tis also the season for Serendipity’s Thanksgiving ice cream pies—available in single- and double-flavor varieties, assembled "bird’s nest" style. And Thanksgiving-inspired bonbons (with pumpkin, cinnamon, vanilla, and chocolate) will be available beginning November 2.
Adults visiting the Webster Groves flagship location of Serendipity can sip a holiday cocktail while pondering their choices. Options include Irish Coffee (with vanilla bonbon, hot coffee, and Jameson), Hot Toddy (with hot tea, lemon, and Four Roses whiskey), and Dirty Snowman (with vanilla ice cream, hot cocoa, and Plantation Rum). Serendipity’s treats can also be ordered online.
