Some of St. Louis' best restaurants are uniting for a good cause.
This Friday, August 4 such restaurants as Sardella, Sugarfire Smoke House, Peacemaker Lobster & Crab Co., Kaldi's Coffee, Cleveland-Heath, Pastaria, Hi-Pointe Drive-In, Ices Plain & Fancy, Pi Pizza, Seoul Taco, and much more are donating a portion of their sales to Pedal the Cause's A World Without Cancer Day.
The funds will go toward Pedal the Cause's efforts in supporting cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children's Hospital. The donation day precedes the organization's annual Pedal the Cause bike ride and fitness event, which will take place September 23–24 at the Chesterfield Amphitheater.
Carrie Sweigart, chief operating officer for Pedal the Cause, says A World Without Cancer Day, now in its fifth year, is a way to highlight the organization's many restaurant partners.
"We have these incredible chefs and local businesses supporting Pedal throughout the year, whether they're at a weekend event serving our riders or doing a giveback," she says. "And this was really our way to say, 'Hey, we want to highlight to the community how generous you are and what you are doing to make a difference.'"
Sweigart praises the many chefs who will serve riders both the night before the September bike ride and after. She says Mike Johnson of Sugarfire is donating a ride-day lunch that will feed the event's 3,100 riders.
"They're doing more than just this [A World Without Cancer Day], but this day is very significant," Sweigart says. "We're shining a light on them and the good work that they're doing and their desire to create a world without cancer."
A handful of retailers, many local, are also participating in the donation day: Jenny Present, Fun in the Sun, JORD, Mandolin Handbags, and Stella & Dot.
"Every single person can take action on A World Without Cancer Day and do their part simply by shopping and dining, which they're already going to do that day in some form," Sweigart says. "Doing it with our lineup of partners allows everyone to join forces."
