With the sweltering 100-plus weather that has settled over St. Louis, one can take cultural refuge in Winter Opera St. Louis’ (even its name evokes cooler climes) Opera Nights, held in the air-conditioned Dominic’s on the Hill (at left), a favorite upscale Italian restaurant for many locals. Gina Galati, the Artistic Director at Winter Opera, also happens to be the daughter of Dominic’s owners, Dominic and Jackie Galati.
Two more Opera Nights remain in the current season: Broadway Night on July 25, and Diners’ Choice on August 29. Broadway Night will feature music from Rodgers and Hammerstein, Gilbert and Sullivan, and Cole Porter, with the occasional modern piece “sneaking in,” according to Administrative Director, Caetlyn Van Buren. Food that night will have a Bolognese emphasis.
For the Diners’ Choice night, Winter Opera takes requests submitted two weeks in advance by phone (314-865-0038) or by email here. Tuscan food will accompany the August dinner, while a piano will accompany the performers, all of whom are connected to Winter Opera’s past, current, or upcoming seasons.
Each Opera Night accommodates between 45-70 people, and often sells out, so make reservations early. Dinners cost $150 for two, not including drinks, tax, or tips, with all proceeds benefitting the sixth season of Winter Opera (which incidentally now performs at the new Skip Viragh Center for the Arts in Frontenac). For reservations, call 314-865-0038.
