Every time we flip the page into a new year, many of us—no, most of us— vow to drop a few pounds, or thirty. We commit to the latest fad diet. Perhaps join a gym. Eat less and exercise more. Go running…once or twice. Or maybe just tune in to see what Oprah is planning to do next.
But here’s an approach I’ve never heard of. And it has to work.
Give up eating one day a week.
Yep. That’s the deal. A colleague passed on lunch the other day, using as his excuse: “I don’t eat on Tuesdays.” Whoa, what? That's a new one. Dumbfounded at the thought of something so bizarre—and so simple—I demanded a full explanation from the guy with the 32 inch waist. But the more I thought about it, the less strange it was. Humans have been “fasting” for eons…Moses fasted, Jesus fasted, Gandhi fasted. Strict Muslims still fast one day a week. Basically the same thing.
I guess it was just hearing it put that way that caught my attention.
I’m sure doctors could weigh in persuasively on both sides of such an oddity, but regardless, I was intrigued….enough to give up eating (for awhile anyway) lunch on Tuesdays, thereby reducing my caloric intake by roughly 7 %.
