Grassi's: OK, now we can admit it...we stayed away from Grassi's for a long time because the place was run-down and the food had gone downhill. No longer. We're happy to report that new owners spiffed the joint up in July 2012 and the food is as tasty as devotees remember. Old fave: the carved roast beef and ham combo with a side salad. New fave: the Wednesday special--a flat-grilled meatball "burger" on garlic cheese bread. If you've got the cojones, order a double ball burger. 10450 German, 314-994-1111, grassisstlouis.com
Price Chopping at The Block Some of the best deals in town are found at Happy Hours and even the best restaurants feature such deals. For example, from 5 to 7 PM Mon-Fri at both locations of The Block (Webster Groves and the CWE), many popular appetizers (like the sliders, Amish wings, pork riblets, and the Potted Pig) are $5, as are select wines and classic cocktails, while several beers—both domestic and craft—are half that price. The same items get discounted again from 9 to 10 PM Mon-Thurs.
Credit Card Miscue Don’t castigate the server who drops your check then ignores the check presenter if all you’ve done is bury your credit card inside it. You see that slot that says “Place credit card here”? Use it. You’ll be surprised at how fast the server will see and then process your payment. Believe me, they either want to turn your table...or go home.
