A week from today, May 23, Temple Grandin, Ph.D, a professor of animal science at Colorado State Unviersity and best-selling author, will visit the St. Louis area to present on one of the topics she’s renowned for—autism. Dr. Grandin’s presentation entitled “Different Not Less: Opportunities to Succeed” comes on the heels of her recently published book, The Autistic Brain: Thinking Across the Spectrum. Held at Greenville College, in Greenville, IL, the event includes an Hors D’oeuvres Social with Grandin at 4:30 PM, Alternative Therapy Speakers at 6:00 PM, and the author’s keynote presentation at 7 PM. See this flyer for more information about the event and how to buy tickets.
In preparation for Grandin’s visit, you might watch the HBO film Temple Grandin starring Claire Danes (both below), for which she won an Emmy. Those interested in animals, and particularly livestock handling and humane slaughter—the other area on which Grandin writes frequently—may want to pick up Animals in Translation or Animals Make Us Human. Check out her website for more on how she changed the way modern slaughterhouses are designed, based in part on her own experiences with autism.
Grandin is an instrumental and powerful force in the culinary world. Look for a follow-up article in Relish after her visit here next week.
