Indulgence has a new name. Salty Caramel from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream has arrived in St. Louis, and it’s a stunner. Dense, creamy, and packed with remarkable flavor, it’s irresistible.
Jeni’s is located in Columbus, Ohio, and has several retail outlets, one of which, on High Street, is easy to reach from I-70. That’s how we found it, and were happy to discover it in Straub’s freezer.
Now that apple season has begun, this would be great with an apple dessert, especially one with tart fruit, assertively seasoned with perhaps ginger and pepper. We can also see it alongside a banana dessert, pecan pie, or even something as homey as oatmeal-raisin cookies. And then there's the chocolate-caramel spectrum, everything from brownies to a chocolate layer cake.
Straub’s is carrying other flavors from Jeni’s, as does Dean and DeLuca in New York; we've seen bourbon butter pecan, strawberry buttermilk, backyard mint, lemon and blueberry yogurt, riesling pear, goat cheese with roasted cherries, and a stunning pistachio honey that actually tastes like pistachios. But salty caramel is where our heart is. And our wallets. It’s not cheap, at $9.99 a pint, but unless you're a midnight raider, it’s so rich that a little goes a long way.
