Owner and Executive Chef Kevin Smith of the 11-month-old Seasons American Cuisine (79 Forum Center in Chesterfield) has decided to close the business. The last night of service will likely be this Saturday, October 29. SLM's senior dining critic Dave Lowry stopped by several times this spring and penned this favorable review.
Besides citing the sluggish economy and a general lack of business, Smith had a bittersweet reason for closing. "It was the Cardinals being in the playoffs that really killed us, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. We normally run a wait on Saturday night. That needs to happen...and it hasn't happened recently."
Smith echoes the consensus of most suburban restaurant owners who claim that business has been off anywhere from 25 to 75% since the Cardinals reached the postseason. And if your position is already tenuous, three weeks of decreased business can put a restaurant in a precarious position.
Win or lose the World Series, though, St. Louisans should take heed and make a point to venture out and support the local restaurants. Between the antics of Don Tony and Sir Albert, there should be no shortage of table conversation.
And should the Series end sooner rather than later, you might want to consider paying a final visit to Seasons. Just don't wear any Cardinal red.
