There are just four tables, and they are open but a single day a week, but Bombay Food Junkies has gone brick-and-mortar. The popular food truck that specializes in Mumbai street fare is now using its St. Ann commissary as a retail dining spot as well.
BFJ co-owner Krupa Panchal reports that her family business has taken over the former Catering by Georgianne space at 3578 Adie Road, just south of the former Northwest Plaza in St. Ann. For now, the newly opened restaurant serves dine-in and take-out from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays only, but, said Panchal, come December they will being serving dinner on Fridays and lunch on Saturdays, too.
The four tables only seat a total of 16 or so in the cozy space, said Panchal, but she encourages diners to drive up, come inside, order, and return to their vehicles to wait for carhop service if they like as an additional option.
Fans of the Panchals’ veggie burgers, Indian palak paneer pizza, mango lassis and so on will be happy to learn the stationary location of the eatery has an expanded menu of treats unavailable on the truck. The St. Ann spot offers additional chaat, or Indian roadside savory snacks, like bhelpuri (below) puffed rice and fried chickpea noodles with vegetables and a tangy tamarind sauce.
Also new to the menu is the similar sevpuri (right), fried bread stuffed with potatoes and chutneys and topped with crunchy-fried noodles made from chickpea flour. BFJ has also rolled out a fresh ginger milk tea, and is planning to add more desserts.
They are also busily decorating the restaurant interior with images of Bombay, Bollywood stars, and cricket memorabilia, said Panchal.
Bombay Food Junkies joins Seoul Taco and Sweet Divine as area food trucks that have parlayed their success into brick-and-mortar locations. Congrats are in order.
