C'mon, now, you're really not surprised, are you? And do you think this Pi will be located within delivery range of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., perhaps? Yessiree. According to Sommers, the DC deal is "all but done."
The pizza that then president-elect Obama proclaimed "the best pizza I have ever eaten" (story #2 here) will soon be a local phone call away. (I'd give anything to take that first order..."Will that be for pick up or delivery, Mr. President?" And just think, no more annoying pizza-making trips to the White House kitchen for Mr. Sommers.
Folks observing Sommers' recent trips to The District figured he was either opening up a pizza joint there or running for office. We can all breathe a sigh of relief...he's still one of us.
OK, onto the details: The District of Pi will be located on F Street, 7-8 blocks from the White House in Penn Quarter, close to the Verizon Center and to the offices of many large law firms (branches of locals Bryan Cave and Polsinelli among them). The space is 4500 SF (= approx 150 seats), plus an additional 800 SF in a mezzanine. "It had to be that big to support the rent," shrugged Sommers.
Pi's custom-brewed beer, Pi Common, crafted by Schlafly (and incidentally available for the first time tonight at all but the Chesterfield Pi) will be available in DC as well. ( A moderately-hoppy lager, "common beer" was popularized in California; the most famous California common beer being Anchor Steam.) More on Common from Evan Benn here. But I digress...
Look for the DC Pi to debut on pi day of next year: 3.14.11. "That date has obvious meaning for us," says Sommers, "It's a logical target. We now need to make it a realistic one."
So...has Sommers maxxed out in St. Louis with 4 units? "Right now we're holding tight," he says. "But downtown is always a possibility." And then the tease: "As is another concept..."
