It was an odd way to begin Cinco de Mayo in St. Louis.
We've tippled tequila by ten and dared to down an entire jalapeño, but never expected to be tending a wood fire on the fifth of May. But Sunday morning, there we were, at The Market at The Cheshire, sporting sweatshirts instead of multi-colored Mexican vests, sipping Kaldi's coffee, and rustling popping, hissing oak logs in one of The Cheshire's five original stone-hearthed, wood-burning fireplaces.
We relaxed, we observed. The Market's cinnamon cheese pocket trumped any pan dulce we could have found around town. Kaldi's coffee sipped from a ceramic mug is a paean to the civility of the bean coffee. And we had no idea there was so much going on at The Cheshire.
Did you know...?
...that The Cheshire currently hosts a community farmer's market every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, complete with a chef's cooking demonstration? Last weekend, Lou Rook III of Annie Gunn's both cooked and signed copies of his impressive new cookbook, Rook Cooks.
...that Erin Bode performed upstairs at The Restaurant last Saturday night and will do so again on June 1? Admittance is free to those dining at Basso or The Restaurant that evening, and $10 for the unwitting. Both table and soft seating is available.
...that you can dine poolside at The Cheshire, choosing from items on the Fox & Hounds Tavern's menu? And that there's live music poolside every Saturday night from 8 to 11 p.m.?
...that both Basso and The Market have patio dining?
...that both Basso and The Restaurant recently rolled out Happy Hour deals? The Restaurant offers a slew of $5 apps, beer, wine, and mixed drink specials (Tue-Sat, 4:30 -6), while Basso boasts $7 pizzas, plus discounted wine and beers, including $6 half pint beer flights. Basso also has a late night menu available until closing at 1 a.m.
...that The Market hosts a complimentary wine tasting every Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m.? There's live acoustic music, too, and wines tasted that evening are discounted and available for grab-and-go.
...that The Restaurant is hosting three wine dinners in May alone? Remaining dinners include the Grower Champagne Dinner on May 14 and the Elderton Wine Dinner on May 22.
...that Sundays are special at The Restaurant? A plated brunch runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by Sunday Supper, a $25 per person multi-course meal (half off for kids under 10) served family-style from 5 to 8 p.m.
So did you know all that? Good. Neither did we.
