Deep in a dark basement
researchers bustle about the secret lab,
until, one night
their years of experimenting
stop:
This is it!
We’ve found it! We’re done!!
Activate the Klaxon sirens!
Turn the nuclear key!
Floodlights slice circles into the black sky.
It’s time
to use the red phone:
Yes--
Notify the President.
One man
opens his palm
to reveal a small nugget
of infinite power;
he cackles in helpless glee.
The Peanut Butter Bonbon is ready.

I didn’t know
I was waiting for this,
but here it is.
The dark chocolate
enrobes
the peanut butter / white chocolate heaven-blended center;
their private menage
exposed on the tongue
is divine obscenity,
forbidden
like all the best things.
The taste finds my endorphins'
long-lost gears
finally joined
within the perfect engine
of the motorcycle
rocketing through the intersection
Jeezusjusttrytohangonaaahhhhhh!!
Soon, the comedown.
the glide to…
the beach house;
is this where I am?
I must be on vacation.
Yes--
waking up from a dream
in a cabana,
above the bed
shadows tickle the bamboo wall,
sunlight and wind playing
through the palm fronds
timed to the sound of the surf
lapping the beach:
I’ve finally found it--
sweet peace
a sigh of relief.
(The salt / toasted-peanut crunch
comes last,
an epilogue.)
It comes and goes
so very fast,
pleasure compressed
to a point
in the past…
Until the
“Oh? Another one?”
Well,
if I must…
Peanut Butter Bonbons are available at both the South City and Maplewood locations of Kakao Chocolates. They inspire poetry.

Editor's Note: The above also inspired Relish... to high-tail it over to Kakao, pick up a few of said bonbons, and present the above ode to Mrs. Relish, followed immediately, of course, by the real bonbons. Relish highly recommends this process...
