What a difference a day makes.
Yesterday, the front window of the new coffee cafe at Colleen’s Cookies looked like the picture below left, a rather, shall we say humble expression of the art of window papering.
This morning the façade (below right) looked considerably more welcoming.
Three years ago, creative cookie maker Colleen Thompson had outgrown her small production kitchen and opened a narrow but deep 1,200-square-foot storefront shop at 7337 Forsyth. Two years ago, she added ice cream sandwiches—really good ice cream sandwiches—to the mix. But there was always an underlying desire for a more complete experience, so when the adjacent 1,200-square-foot space became available, the aspring café owner took advantage.
Today at 6:30 a.m., Caife Caife of Colleen’s Cookies officially opened its doors.
Initially, the fare will be somewhat limited: coffee from small batch roaster Intelligentsia, sweet and savory pastries, and the shop’s signature cookies (below).
Look for unusual lunch/café items, like pastry tarts (below) and pastry pockets (think of an uptown hot pocket), plus a few more we mentioned here, to be added within the next month.
The décor for the new space is as whimsical as the old, with chandeliers fabricated from sundry items such as plumbing parts and barn pulleys (both below).
Now, about that ponderous name: Caife Caife of Colleen’s Cookies. “Caife” is the Gaelic word for both “coffee” and “café,” so the shop is pronounced “coffee café,” which is exactly what it is. And drilling down a bit further, Thompson’s first name is pronounced “Coe-LEEN.” Which is all far too complicated for us...how about just, "I'll meet you at Colleen’s?"
