Restaurants are definitely getting more and more creative with their promotions of late: Blueberry Hill offered a “Gettysburger” for one day only last week (presented with a copy of the Gettysburg address); La Patisserie Chouquette offered the “T-Duck,” a turducken croissiant, last Saturday; Strange Donuts partnered with Pappy’s and Food Outreach to create the “Outreachus Turkey” donut for a three-day promotion. The list goes on…
This week’s flash of marketing moxy comes from Vernon’s BBQ, on the cusp of its first birthday. According to a release, the First Reverse Birthday Celebration “turns a typical gift-receiving occasion into a gift-giving opportunity,” one that benefits two local charities.
The celebration kicks off on Black Friday, with the introduction of an expanded menu, and ends on Thursday, December 5--the official Reverse Celebration Day--when guests receive an item from the new menu for free, provided they donate a canned good, or several. Freebee hours run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day and the gratis menu item will change every hour. All canned goods will be donated to Operation Food Search.
During the event, customers receive a raffle ticket with purchase, with prizes awarded daily, that all culminates in a "Backyard BBQ Grand Prize" drawing on December 5. Raffle tickets may also be purchased. Those proceeds go to the University City Education Foundation.
Vernon’s is in located University City, owner Matt Stiffelman lives in U City, and both charities are based in U City. But you don’t have to live in U City to help them all out…and celebrate a milestone birthday.
