There is something oddly satisfying about indulging to the point of illness. We do it as children with Halloween candy and most adults have had enough booze to rattle their feathers a time or two. And both kids and adults have been known to overdo it at carnivals, the ultimate smorgasbord of delights.
A pioneer in keeping the carnival dream alive year-round, Harry Freund left his finance job to open his restaurant. For children, Mr. Harry’s Carnival Foods is the West County equivalent of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory -- a place where pint-size patrons can gorge themselves on awe and syrupy sweetness, even in February.
In addition to fairground favorites like corndogs, funnel cakes, and cotton candy, Mr. Harry’s offers pulled pork sammies, award-winning brisket, and peach cobbler.
Mr. Harry’s marks his one-year anniversary next month with some great changes. Parked in the front of the restaurant is a brand-new mobile kitchen, which means he'll be on the move this summer, making cameos at games, events, and even weddings.
Another -- and perhaps more appealing -- anniversary addition are the snowtinis. You heard me right: snowcones for grown-ups. You can sip on the sly and your kids will be none-the-wiser. And at $4.00 and with a full shot of um, hi-octane syrup in each one, the “shaven not stirred” cocktails are one of the best deals in town.
So if we didn’t have you at snowtini, Mr. Harry himself is reason enough to make the trek to Ballwin. Super-friendly and infectiously personable, he impresses with his passion and dedication to making people happy.
After a great conversation and a killer brisket sandwich, we left Mr. Harry’s grinning ear-to-ear … with snowtini-stained lips.
