the rumor, originally reported by Ian Froeb, that Fu Manchu has closed. "We shut it down it last week," said Johnson. "It never gained momentum" (a rarity in the world of restaurants conceived by Mike).
Opened in May 2008, it intrigued at least one editor and one critic, but "just never came around." Fu was the Asian version of Johnson's heretofore successful multi-cultured "small plates" concept. Playing a major part in the decision to close was that Johnson has a buyer for the space, but he declined to give specifics: "Apparently, the permits and liquor licenses have been applied for and the drawings are done, but I don't want to jinx it."
He did confirm it won't be another Pan-Asian restaurant.
What's next for the fast-moving Johnson? Something uncharacteristic: "I'm gonna take a break for awhile. Maybe even get out of the business." He admitted those back-to-back doubles were finally getting to him. –- George Mahe
