A celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off this weekend at Belas Artes Multicultural Center & Art Gallery. Events run the gamut from intriguing (Spanish folk ballet) to enriching (Latino Art Festival) to just plain fun (Tango class and dance following). Fine, but shouldn’t all this be in Stef’s culture blog? Thank you for asking. For us, the highlight of the month will be Una Noche en Peru on Wednesday, Sept 24, when Peruvian chefs will be flown in to complement the magical, mystical and moving music of Inca Sons (click here for the “Sound of the Incas”). Peruvian food is wildly diverse, having been influenced by the flavors of several continents. Diners could see anything from tamales to goat stew to pachamanca (a traditional dish of banana-wrapped meat and vegetables cooked over hot rocks). And I hesitate to mention that documentary on the Peruvian Andes where fried guinea pig was a celebratory meal, but you get the idea. Inca Sons’ performance has been called “a FEAST for the eyes and ears.” See, it all comes together…a week from Wednesday. – George Mahe
