Log another restaurant closing into the January record books.
After a two year run, La Salsa, at 140 S. Kirkwood Rd (in Kirkwood's Station Plaza), shut its doors last week, citing "lack of business." La Salsa's original location in Creve Coeur remains open. Some thought La Salsa was a local endeavor, when in fact it's a California-based, fast-casual Fresh-Mex chain with about 80 locations nationwide. With a name like La Salsa, though, it makes sense that its main claim to fame is its 8-item, fresh salsa bar.
Maybe its overachieving bookend Bar Louie had something to do with the closing; or maybe Kirkwood had been seduced by got-there-first Amigo's Cantina (we blame Edgar Dominguez and his killer Edgar-itas), or maybe it was simply "the curse." Another popular chain restaurant, Johnny Rocket's, failed in the same space.
Yet Station Plaza, with its fountain, gazebo, and expansive patio, is popular and seems to have become Kirkwood's new "town square," a bustling locale for many concerts, rallies, and city events. It's no surprise then that more than one prospective tenant is interested in the space.
