It's early December and the cooking season is in full swing. For some of us who no longer cook big family meals, there's a certain nostalgia about how much fun it was (once the relief passes). And it's also the season when we think about others, even when the rest of the year we get so wrapped up in roaring through our usual lives.
Comes now an opportunity for those folks. Haven House, a facility that offers accomodations to families of patients at several local hospitals, needs volunteers to cook.
Here's the deal: On weekends and holidays, they use volunteers to prepare the two meals a day they normally serve, breakfast and dinner. The volunteers prepare the food and bring it to Haven House ready to heat and serve. For the evening meal, for instance, it would be a main course, a side dish and a dessert. The usual census in the house on weekends is about 35 - if there are fewer, they'll let you know. You're welcome to stay and serve and mingle with their guests, and help box up leftovers for folks who drag in later, tired from long days in waiting rooms or treatments.
They ask for simple, fairly hearty food, so no need to haul our the Beef Wellilngton or coq au vin recipes. This is meatloaf time, or roast chicken, things like that. There are a few restrictions, which you can find in the brochure they'll send you.
And if there isn't a time slot open that'll work for you in December, there are always weekends year round.
