Sorry, but it's my opinion that Valentine's Day is a lousy, no-win wasteland of few options. Take your loved one out to dinner and you encounter unromantic couples poking at overpriced meals. Don't go out to eat and you're a cur in the doghouse. A movie? You're a cheap hoosier. A play? Showing some class. A spa treatment, dinner and a room at the Four Seasons? Only if that A-B stock check cleared.
Ah, but this year is different. There is another option. On Saturday the 14th, you have the opportunity to do something creative. And fun. And adventurous.
An underground dinner is taking place that night.
Readers of this blog may remember a few rambling posts about my experience at the first one (that I knew of) back in August. Since then, the same covert chef has held one dinner a month, each one with its own unique twist. This month is no different.
For this rendition there will be two sides to the room - a red side and a black side. The former for romantics and traditionalists; the latter for cynics and contrarians (and anyone who might find an anti-valentine's day approach amusing). There will be live music, plus drinks and signature cocktails (included) beforehand. Seating will be at communal tables of eight (with a discount given if you reserve a full table yourself). Single diners are welcome -- on either side.
Red and black will each have its own 5-course menu, each course paired with an appropriate wine from a little known gem of a winery, Dusted Valley Vintners of Walla Walla, Washington. The tally is $100 per person, with "tip appreciated but not expected."
The "underground" distinction comes from the way the event's information is disseminated ... invitation, secret website and menu specifics are by referral only and, although diners are informed of the event's general area beforehand, the exact address is not given out until the morning of the event.
Romantics and cynics alike can email me at gmahe@stlmag.com for further information. I understand there are still spots available. Reservations will be accepted through Sunday, Feb 8.
