Is it coincidence or intentional that the Pie Oh My! food truck hit the streets the week of “Pi Day,” March 14? We don’t really care. We just want pie in our piehole, and if the dessert is driven to its vicinity, so much the better.
Pi Day, for those who don’t know, is a cheeky celebration of π, the mathematical constant which is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, approximately 3.14. The celebration of circles and lower mathematics happens annually on 3/14, and is sometimes noted with special relish by restaurants that offer circular fare. Locally, the family of Pi Pizzerias goes bonkers.
Jane Callahan (below), proprietor of Pie Oh My!, has chosen this week to roll out the bakery’s new food truck, a 1989 GMC delivery truck that once hauled Twinkies and Ding Dongs. (She bought it at an auction at the North Broadway Hostess factory when the company declared bankruptcy late last year.) She and her pie minions have given it a snazzy new look and filled it with pies both sweet and savory, in all sizes.
The sweet pies on the truck come in tarts, mini-pies (similar to below left) and slices, in a rotating selection of five to eight flavors. We’re partial to pies like the apple green chili, blackberry sour cream, cashew chocolate maple, cherry crumble, coconut chocolate walnut, orange maple, peanut butter with chocolate crust, pear blueberry, pecan made with Jameson whiskey, and sweet potato.
Savory hand pies are currently available in the chicken pot pie flavor (and in different sizes, see above right). Callahan says she eventually plans to offer her version of shepherd’s pie, a chicken-curry pot pie, a vegetarian savory pie, and a Southwestern entry featuring ground beef and black beans.
Beverages include soft drinks and freshly brewed Stringbean Coffee.
Callahan said that the truck will not be hitting the streets all five weekdays of the week, but as many lunchtimes as she can muster. It will park at all the usual places: Wells Fargo, City Garden, Purina, various other companies’ lots, and industrial parks. It will also be at some Food Truck Fridays, St. Louis Art Museum summer outdoor movie nights, and St. Louis County Parks “food-truck corral” events at Faust, Laumeier and Tilles parks. (You can certainly rent the whole truck for private events, too, she said.) Check Facebook and Twitter, as per usual, to see where and when the truck next plans to visit.
The back of the truck features a bon mot from the mind of Callahan’s husband, she said: “Crimp My Pie.” When we see the slogan it brings to mind the MTV show “Pimp My Ride.” And then, to coin a phrase, we say, “Truck, yes!”
