Admit it: We've all succumbed to the lure of the drive-through. Sometimes we learn of an offering that deserves another visit.
We are pleased to report that we've found breakfast sandwiches that use eggs cracked and cooked after the sandwich is ordered. And it's at,of all places, White Castle. The egg sandwiches have sausage with a decent amount of seasoning, or bacon the Castle folks claim is improved, and does seem to be of higher quality; all this with (or without) cheese, on a slider bun topped with a just-fried egg, yolk broken and cooked past runniness.
But wait–there's more. The morning sandwich options also include the classic White Castle burger topped with egg and cheese. For some, this may be nirvana.. However, it can rise even higher by substituting (for an extra dime) jalapeno cheese. Talk about a big-flavor breakfast....
We also tried the jalapeno cheese with the bacon-egg combo and found it pretty darned good, too, but the onions always cooked with the White Castle burger keep that combination as our favorite.
The Castle is in the process of several menu upgrades, including new whole-grain muffins that are square, nicely moist and sized to fit The Box, and a chicken slider made with bird that hasn't been chopped up and re-formed, merely cut to fit the bun. And they're about to inaugurate online ordering.
But cooking the egg on demand is real progress in fast food.
