They say there's no such thing as a free lunch, but sometimes, if you get lucky, there might be a free breakfast. They call it "Free Bagel Friday," and it puts a smile on the faces of the customers at Richmond Heights' In & Out Market each week.
Here's the deal. You walk through the door at the In & Out. You ask for a free bagel. They give you one (with free cream cheese, butter, etc. as well). The End.
Did you notice the part where you have to make a purchase to get the free bagel? No? That's because you don't. It's completely free. Cue the Hallelujah Chorus.
“Seventy percent of our clientele is from this area right around the store,” explained In & Out Manager Jason Layton. “So we thought, you know what, we'll give back to the people who come in there all the time.”
The bagels are from Companion, and they sometimes last until 3 or 4 p.m. each Friday, depending on the day's business, said Layton.
The gesture is part and parcel of a friendly new game plan from In & Out's new owners. They took over the biz at the end of January, remodeled, and started wooing new customers. The coffee they serve is from Kaldi's, and it's freshly ground every morning. There's a nice variety of liquor and microbrewed beer in the small-ish space. And did we mention the free bagels?
On Free Bagel Friday, said Layton, “Everyone is very happy, especially the regulars, who just love it -- and they're already coming in for their coffee anyway.”
Christina Stremlau, another In & Out employee, said that on Fridays some customers “are like ‘Oh, what do we have to buy to get the free bagel?’ but we say, ‘No, this is our appreciation for you, for all you buy here throughout the week.’ And then it's fun because they get excited.”
Will Free Bagel Friday make you as happy as Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds" can? It's a good start. ♫ "Don't worry, 'bout a thing, oh no,
cause every little thing gonna be all right."♫
