Salim Hanna is a survivor. He survived the early days of Saleem’s restaurant in the mid-‘70s, when eating Mideast food in the Midwest was a new concept. He moved Saleem’s three times, from South Grand to U. City to Creve Coeur to its current location in Winchester. And the man has probably eaten enough roasted garlic to give him superhuman strength and longevity, too.
Soon the world will know the secrets of Salim and son/chef/co-owner Simon Hanna’s Lebanese delicacies when Garlic Paradise airs on the Travel Channel, at 9 p.m. on Wed., April 24.
The footage of Saleem’s West, expected to comprise one segment of the one-hour program, was shot last summer and fall at the restaurant. Viewers should be able to enjoy the notorious garlic-eating contest, belly-dance performances, and footage of the Hanna family cooking garlic-butter sauce and garlic-potato dip, said Salim.
If you want to eat garlic while you watch people eating garlic, Saleem’s will host a special celebration on the 24th. The restaurant’s doors will open at 5 p.m. to those with reservations, the screening of the episode begins at 9 p.m., and the kitchen remains open ‘til 9:30 p.m.
UPDATE: Travel Channel postponed the airdate for this show. When the new airdate is announced, we will update this post yet again.
UPDATE #2: Travel Channel has announced the revised airdate: Saturday, May 11 at 3 PM CDT. Saleem's West will record the show and replay it at the restaurant throughout Saturday evening.
