There are folks who believe that people they consider foodies—whatever that means—do not eat fast food. (The first restaurant critic I ever knew swore he didn't eat junk food, whether fast or otherwise. We left a nationally famous restaurant and got in his car. Gleaming on the floor of the back seat was a bag of Fritos.)
Well, it's not so. We do. We're just choosy. It's hard to beat, for example, the White Castle breakfast sandwich, with eggs cracked and fried fresh to order, especially when the jalapeño cheese is added.
Still, I approached the new chicken wings at McDonald's with trepidation. I'm not a breaded wings fan at all and expected spicing that was, at best, reticent.
Mighty Wings, eh? Okay, gimme your best shot.
The fact is, they're pretty darn good. They're large, well-drained, and fresh—at least on my visits. And the seasoning shows considerable thought. Cumin and garlic dances around, and the heat from the spicing is slow-rising but moderately serious heat. They're best paired with Dr. Pepper or a nice zinfandel, I think.
McD's says they're a limited-time item, so move it. They're definitely worth another pass around the building.
