Sugaree Baking Company has built up a sweet reputation for producing incredible wedding cakes as well as for dessert items they wholesale to various local restaurants. But therein lies the rub…first off, the wedding season is somewhat seasonal and secondly, restaurants have cut back their orders in response to a shrinking customer base. I’m happy to report that Sugaree is turning their lemons into lemonade…or in this case Lemon Meringue Pie. Starting Friday, October 31, Sugaree will begin producing made-from-scratch, no-trans-fat, all-butter-crust, deep-dish pies in 10 flavors. Of special note, they will come in two sizes, 6 and 10 inch. I’m not sure about you, but give me a 10-inch pie, a fork, some privacy and maybe some vanilla Haagen-Dazs, and I can do some serious damage (and rack up some serious guilt). So I like this 6-inch pie idea. Plus they’re $5 each. I don’t care how bad the economy is, can’t we all rationalize a fiver for a fresh-baked pie? – George Mahe
