It opened quietly 10 days ago...there were no banners or balloons, or strings of flags, or crazy air dancers with those flailing, tubular arms...just the sign at left. The original Eovaldi's Deli shares space inside Oldani Brothers Sausage Company on The Hill, and the new satellite location shares space inside DD's Irish Pub and Karaoke at 1740 S. Brentwood Blvd. Owners Denny and Mike McKay (Eovaldi grandsons) are excited to tap the "busy and dense " area at Brentwood and Highway 40.
It was last August when everybody's favorite karaoke dive bar, The Double-D, relocated to bigger and brighter digs on the ground floor of the Joseph White Building, even changing the name to something, umm, not so in your face.
DD's Irish Pub and Karaoke opens at 4 PM, while Eovaldi's hours are currently 10 AM to 2 PM Mon -Fri, so don't expect to endure a William Hung while waiting for your order...and you won't wait long. Parking is up a ramp on the north side of the building.
Eovaldi's makes a tasty sandwich. The Extra Special (with roast beef, ham, mortadella, Genova salami, pepper cheese, let/tom/pickles, onions, pepper cheese, light mayo, and a squirt of the house Italian dressing) is as good as any poor-boy-style sandwich in town--and at $4.95 for 6 inches, it's as good a value. Of note: The Genova salami on that sandwich comes from Oldani's, which, to me anyway, is less fatty and greasy than salami-king Volpi...and just as flavorful. Eovaldi's other meats are local as well, originating from either Oldani's or Miller Ham.
Then there's the Sicilian Bomber, a gussied-up "dip" sandwich dosed with bomber gravy, so named because of its tendency to drop bombs of the gravy's components--sauteed onions, mushrooms, and red peppers. Warning: Do not attempt to eat a Bomber while in your car or if wearing long sleeves. Just find a seat somewhere--maybe at one of Eovaldi's eight sidewalk tables--and let 'er rip.
