Anyone remember Athenian Greek Imports at the corner of Clayton and Big Bend? I do, only because it was my neighborhood gyro and baklava joint...until it closed 3 years ago. Many, like me, mourned its passing.
Well weep no more, my lamb- and tzatziki-loving friends, Fozzie's Sandwich Emporium is planning to fill that long overdue void (as well as a few more), setting up shop in a free-standing building at 1170 Big Bend (at Wise). Mark Lucas (formerly of El Scorcho) is spearheading the venture, set to open within 30 days.
Along with traditional spit-roasted gyros, Fozzie's (named after his fiancee's cat) will serve 7 kinds of hot dogs, griddled burgers, several varieties of French dip-type sandwiches, and half a dozen gourmet salads. Don't expect your average sandwich hash house: look for homemade soups, artisan cheeses on those sandwiches, house made chips, and tzatziki sauce using made-in-house yogurt.
With ample parking, plenty of space for a patio and garden, plus full access at 40/64, it seems the ideal location for a small-footprint takeout and delivery restaurant.
Note to Mark: Thanks for including gyros in the mix...I have an electric knife I'll gladly donate to the cause. Opa! -- George Mahe
