Ken Cobb’s perfect lunch is a meaty sandwich and a cupcake. The retiree and his wife Kathy are re-entering the workforce to open Farmhouse Sandwiches in O’Fallon, Mo., on Aug.6. His plan: to sell tasty, you-call-it sandwiches and a surprising variety of cupcakes to the harried corporate workers of the far-west ‘burbs.
The new eatery (located in the storefront recently occupied by Lindsay's Chocolate Café will specialize in sandwiches, salads, soups, and chili, and utilize Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, Fazio’s bread, Kaldi’s coffee, and cupcakes courtesy of the nearby Bakery Shoppe — “all the best,” said Cobb.
“The restaurant is designed for very quick in-and-out service for people on their lunch break,” he added.
His name-your-meat sandwiches invite customers to build their own lunches from a selection of nine breads, 11 lunchmeats, nine cheeses (including a chipotle Gouda and a several varieties of Vermont cheddar), bacon, lettuce, tomato, condiments, etc. The requisite suggestions include the club, a three-meat Italian (with hot pepper relish), chicken salad, BLT, a brisket au jus, a Reuben, and others.
Sides will include a Greek pasta salad with salami and feta, mac & cheese, three-potato salad, cole slaw, and marinated carrots prepared according to Kathy’s own recipe.
Cobb says he plans to offer box lunches for corporate meetings, too.
Salads are highlighted by a smoked salmon salad that also includes field greens, toasted pecans, gorgonzola crumbles, and a raspberry vinaigrette.
The Cobbs are partnering with O’Fallon’s Bakery Shoppe and its owner Karen Porter to offer an impressive array of cupcakes (above left). Featured flavors include Chunky Monkey, banana cream pie, carrot cake, Boston cream pie, red velvet, raspberry lemonade, triple chocolate, peanut butter and jelly, orange freeze, and the intriguing green tea. Most have creamy fillings in the middle.
Farmhouse Sandwiches’ interior (below) features a cozy fireplace area for winter, and a large patio for the temperate months (remember those?).
The shop offers a small children’s menu as well, including a Fluffernutter (marshmallow fluff and peanut butter) sandwich (above, at right).
