What’s hot this Easter? Ripping the heads off marshmallow Peeps and forcing them into awkward “dessert sushi” configurations, that’s what.
Inspired by images like these on Pinterest, Jeanie Bryan, the Youth Services Specialist at the St. Louis County Library’s Mid County Branch, is welcoming tweens and teens for a “Peeps Sushi” event in April.
Peeps Sushi, aka “Peepshi,” is a fun creative activity for kids of all ages.
Bryan explains how to make a “Peeps sashimi”:
“You make the roll with a Rice Krispie treat, you behead the Peep, you pop the Peep onto it, and you wrap it in a piece of ‘Fruit by the Foot’” (right).
Sweet! (Maybe too sweet, actually.)
There are many variations on the method and materials, but any way you slice them, these brightly colored (purple, yellow, blue, and pink will be dissected at the library) abominations are fun to create – and some of the fun is of the ghoulish variety.
“I used to run the ‘candy sushi’ activity for the library,” said Bryan, “but Peeps Sushi (below) sounded awesome because you’re beheading the Peeps. The teens will love it!”
Hey, who wouldn’t enjoy corrupting these too-cute marshmallow chicks? Feast your eyes on more than 60 ultra-creative entrants in this year’s Washington Post Peeps Diorama Contest, including the showstopper, “Twinkie: Rest in Peeps,” featuring Peeps as mourners at a Twinkie funeral, presided over by a “Peeps Pope,” while in an adjacent graveyard, Ho Hos and Hostess Cupcakes rest in eternal slumber. It’s a jaw-dropper.
There is a rumor that when you cut a Peep, they release a “silent scream,” too high for the human ear to detect.
I asked Bryan is there was any truth to the rumor.
“I don’t know,” she said, “but I can’t wait to find out!”
