It's no secret that housing in St. Louis tends to be cheaper than property on the coasts.
The low prices caught the attention of Curbed, a website dedicated to real estate, interior design, and architecture. It recently included St. Louis in its list of the 10 rising cities in the U.S. that are most affordable for home ownership.
Curbed consulted experts from Urban Land Institute, RCLCO Real Estate Advisors, American Planning Association, and Realtor.com to help build the list. Curbed also looked at job growth, home value, and millennial population growth for each city.
According to the article, the City of St. Louis—with a population of 315,685—has a median home price of $179,000 and a millennial population growth of 13 percent.
"The Gateway to the West has traditionally had a low profile," writes the article's author Patrick Sisson, "but its fortunes look increasingly bright these days, with a billion-dollar construction boom, including new work around the Ballpark Village development and a fast-growing startup scene."
The article also highlights the Cortex Innovation Community and upcoming attractions like the City Foundry Food Hall.
Other cities on the list include Indianapolis, Columbus, Boise, Colorado Springs, San Antonio, and Providence. St. Louis has the second-lowest median home price on the list—behind Indianapolis at $175,000.
