Rather than a Hallmark-esque two-story covered in snow, now your childhood home or favorite St. Louis landmark can be captured inside a wintry snow globe. Using 3-D printing, a new company is combining art and technology to create personalized snow globes for St. Louis.
Founded by Karl Stiefvater, Lisa Donahue, and Amy VanDonsel, the St. Louis startup Snow Day launches at 7 p.m. this Saturday, November 10, at the upcoming Rockwell Beer Company (1320 S. Vandeventer), where they will debut snow globes housing structures picked by such local artists as Mary Engelbreit, Charles Houska, Cbabi Bayoc, Peat Wollaeger, Alicia LaChance, and more.
After receiving a picture of a business, home, or potential globe inhabitant, they use photogrammetry to 3-D print a version small enough to fit inside the snow globe dome. The company has already created a few Lou-centric prototypes—Lemp Brewery and the Cherokee Street native sculpture for starters.
The globes will be available to purchase by silent auction at this Saturday's Snow Ball as well as soon from their online shop. Proceeds from the auction will go to Assisi House, which provides housing and assistance to those in need.
