William Bernoudy, who at one time served as a student under Frank Lloyd Wright, was one of modern architecture’s most exciting designers. Born in St. Louis, most of his prominent building projects were centered here as well.
This includes 24 Dielman Road, a five-bedroom behemoth found in Ladue. Built in 1952, this split-level home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and rightfully so. On display here is a masterclass in modern design, complete with brick red exterior and a sleek oak wood interior, all based within with a Constructivist-style influence.
Despite the home’s age, the features here are timeless, and often, undeniably Bernoudy—such as the woodwork and his original fixtures. The living room has a prominent brick hearth and the kitchen has new a glistening quartz finishing. The vaulted ceiling and windows that span from the ground up, give the space a luminous aura, one that seems larger than life. Redwood horizontal timbers give the space its shape. Through French doors, find the backyard, where in addition to the hot tub and pool house, a gorgeous and uniquely shaped pool adds a finishing touch. The main floor's master suite (where the bathroom has a steam shower and a large bathtub) includes a walk-in closet and a walk out to a large patio.
The house has a few expansions from the initial design, including two bedroom suites and a two-car garage. Despite these, the spirit of midcentury-modern lives on—within the walls it is apparent that a caring and thoughtful design was imagined by a supreme mind of architecture.
