“Unique,” “eclectic,” and “reasonably priced” are a few of the words Lisa Slyman uses to describe Maxwell’s Interiors and Gifts (205 N. Kirkwood Road, 314-858-9091), her new home décor boutique that opened in downtown Kirkwood in November.
Maxwell’s Interiors and Gifts is co-owned by Slyman and Joseph DiMercurio, an interior designer with 30 years of experience. The two originally met when Slyman and her husband hired DiMercurio to decorate their home. Later, they decided to go into business together.
The store, named after Slyman's pet Pomeranian, is packed full of artwork, decorative clocks, jewelry, baby items, gently used furniture, and more. If you don’t see the perfect piece of furniture in-store, Slyman and DiMercurio can scour other sources to help make your room complete. Maxwell’s is also the only store in St. Louis to carry shirts and accessories from the Mississippi-based line Girlie Girl Originals.
“We wanted it to be reasonable so that anybody could afford to buy something,” Slyman says, noting that prices start at just $5.
DiMercurio’s skillset enables the boutique to offer something special: personalized interior design services. Customers can bring in photos of a space to ask for advice, or they can make an in-home appointment to have DiMercurio take measurements and get a feel for their style and tastes.
“I try to help people understand their vision,” DiMercurio says. “I like showing people…that you can use gently used [pieces] to mix and match to get what you want.”
Plus, Slyman says, DiMercurio’s design services are complimentary for anyone who’s purchasing décor through Maxwell’s.
"We love Kirkwood," Slyman says. "People have been super friendly here and very supportive. And there's great walk-by and drive-by traffic."
Maxwell’s Interiors and Gifts is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
