Suddenly, wallpaper is back—in a very big way. Plain walls are being dismissed in favor of colorful stripes, fanciful scenes, small prints, large geometrics, chinoiserie, and even checks. Frankly, I consider this trend with a definite dose of skepticism. How long will it last…this time? Will I wallpaper my rooms only to find that the fad has once again faded—and the room instantly looks dowdy and dated? And, if you have ever done it, you know ripping off wallpaper can be a chore.
Unless it is meant to be removed.
The latest and hottest trend is vinyl wallpaper that can be slicked up—and simply steamed down. The sources range from companies (Urban Outfitters) to big-box stores (Target, Lowe’s, and others carry decals) to a boatload of Etsy entrepreneurs.
Here is a sample from the shop Livette. A 20.9-by-48-inch piece runs $34; a 20.9-by-96-inch piece is $66, and a custom size of wallpaper is $70.
With ever-changing tastes—and trends—this may be the best, least expensive way to go.
