Architect Paul Fendler of Fendler + Associates designed this Clayton home for an empty-nester couple who were interested in downsizing but had some very specific requirements. Despite the smaller size, the home needed to be airy and bright and provide the wife, an artist and metalsmith, with both work and display spaces. The main living space has an open floor plan, 8-foot windows, and 10-foot ceilings that accommodate several large built-in cabinets with glass shelves and hidden LED lighting. “Crown molding and millwork with wider, bigger Shaker-style lines reinforce the sense of simplicity,” says Fendler. On the second floor, Fendler designed an artist’s studio with several north-facing windows that flood the room with natural light. Outdoors, a lap pool and pool house with screens on all four sides echo the clean, airy aesthetic of the main house.
