Courtship: When Stacie Lanter agreed to meet Tim McCormack at One 19 Tapas Bar after the two had been chatting on Match.com, she pretended to like wine. (“At the time, I was barely even drinking white wine—but we recently honeymooned in Napa Valley, and now he’s got me into red!” she laughs.) Instead of ending their first date after dinner, Stacie and Tim decided to go to Billy G’s for a few more drinks. On the way over, they found themselves walking in a quiet little alleyway. “I knew the date was going well,” Tim says, “but I wanted to see if it was going really well.” So he used the moment of calm and privacy in the alley to give Stacie a kiss.
Just a few days later, when Stacie and Tim were on their second date—believe it or not, at another wine bar—Stacie got a phone call that her 15-year-old daughter, Mallie, was being rushed to the hospital. An optometrist at a shopping mall eye center had noticed a growth in her eye after she’d come in with irritation from what she figured was a faulty contact lens. When Stacie turned to leave her date with Tim, she asked if he’d follow her to the hospital—a telltale sign for Tim that she trusted him to be there for her. Although Mallie’s diagnosis was far worse than anyone expected, Tim stood by Stacie’s side the following weeks, and by the time Mallie’s condition had stabilized, the two were convinced they were meant to be together.
Proposal: In honor of their first kiss, Stacie and Tim got in the habit of “doing a quick smooch,” Tim says, every time they passed the alley next to Billy G’s. “So when we were planning to meet some friends at Billy G’s for dinner, I knew she’d be expecting that,” Tim says. But he decided to surprise Stacie that night last July by proposing in the alley, too. But Tim was a bit nervous. “I saw him fumbling around in his pocket,” Stacie says, “and I was like, ‘What are you doing?’” Tim says he was just trying to say “something extra special,” that he loved her more than his own words could portray. When he dropped to his knee, Stacie was totally surprised—but didn’t hesitate for a second to say, “Yes!”
Ceremony & Reception: Stacie and Tim got married on July 8 with ceremony at the Old Barn Inn at St. Albans and reception at the St. Albans Country Club. Because the temperature was relatively mild for summer in St. Louis, they decided to hold their ceremony outside on a grassy knoll set stop a three-tiered hill by the barn. For the reception, Stacie filled the ballroom with flowers, all in lilac and lavender with a few blues and ivories—colors chosen by her two daughters.
Because Stacie’s parents and Tim’s father and brother had passed away in recent years, the couple also decided to have a memory table at their reception with photographs of their late family members doing what they loved most. “We wanted to honor them,” Stacie says, “since they couldn’t be there. Although they weren’t physically with us on our special day, they were still very much there in our hearts.”
