Courtship: Caroline Kelly moved to St. Louis from Connecticut nine years ago for nursing school. She met local native Sean Milford while they worked together at the City Museum. Fast friends, they finally spent time together outside of work at a group hangout: HandleBar trivia night. Sean asked Caroline out shortly after. She is a nurse in Cardiac Telemetry at St. Mary’s hospital, and Sean is an attorney. They still crush trivia to this day.
Proposal: Caroline and Sean had been together five years before he proposed. In the summer of 2017, they took a road trip with friends to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. They had chosen rings together, so the proposal, though expected, was no less magical. Under the stars and among the surf, Sean asked Caroline to be his wife.
Ceremony: The couple married at Boo Cat Club, an eclectic, sleek venue that features basement “Catacombs,” a ballroom, and theater, which is where the ceremony took place. The nontraditional religious event included a handfasting ritual, a nod to Caroline’s Celtic heritage and the origin of the expression “tying the knot.” The couple clasp hands, and the officiant ties them together with a ribbon. The bride’s grandfather sang “Til There Was You” from The Music Man to Sean and Caroline from on stage.
Reception: The reception, also at Boo Cat Club, featured St. Louis–themed décor and food. Groomsmen rocked socks embroidered with the STL flag. Sean’s brother created centerpieces that featured photos of iconic locations throughout the city that mapped their love story, such as the Botanical Gardens, City Museum, and Tower Grove Park. Urban Chestnut Beer and Ted Drewes were served. A stacked dessert table was a must-have. In addition to the cake and ice cream, guests enjoyed a late-night snack from Strange Donuts. Shades of blush, gold, and white and pink roses imbued the hall with warmth and romance. Friends and family sang along to the chorus of the bride’s father-daughter dance to Neil Young’s “Long May You Run.” The best part? Caroline’s dad accompanied on the harmonica between dance breaks.
