This Town & Country homeowner wanted to show off his car collection so it had to be more than just lit.
The challenge for me, the lighting designer, was to create an “environment” for the collection. We chose to illuminate the cars with the type of lights found in a car showroom industrial fixtures.
But I didn’t stop there. I also made sure that other fixtures were installed so both the fronts and the rears of the cars in the collection were illuminated. They needed to be shown in three dimensions.
Our goal was to make the cars sparkle—and they do. Along the back wall, we installed the owners’ miniature car collection. We designed the lighting so that wall was visually interesting and so each car stood out. The whole effect was the design illumination brought the attention to the beauty of the owner’s great collection. The overall illumination is on a control system. Light levels are pre-set so when the owner wants to work on his cars he hits the scence button for "work" and when he is having guest over he hits the scence "entertain" adjusting the light levels for more dramatic impact.
Thus the lighting designer has brought "theater lighting" to create the desired effect: WOW, what a collection!
