I’m starting to see a real interest in reviving campaign style furniture and accessories in the interior design world… and I like it! At first it was just a piece here and there, high end and low, but now it seems to be flooding the pages of design magazines and blogs everywhere. Campaign style usually refers to furniture that was meant to be hauled around by military officers during wartime activities. Many of the pieces disassemble or fold for portability and it’s often common to see corner braces and brass reinforcing caps that prevent corners from being damaged in transit. Most of what we know as Campaign furniture comes from 18th and 19th century British colonial pieces that were commissioned by officers of the time.
Ok, Wikipedia history lesson over. So here’s what’s really cool about campaign furniture— it’s so versatile that it works in a variety of styles, from traditional to super modern. Pieces typically have very simple, clean lines and allow a degree of formality but still have a casual vibe to them. They are also very textural and can have really interesting combinations of brass, canvas, leather, and wood – perfect for softening the hard surfaces of a kitchen. Vintage original pieces can be pretty pricey, but there are plenty of older reproductions that can be found cheaply all over. And the new designs are so colorful too!
